WHO IS KATD?

Kids Aspiring to Dream, also known as KATD, is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization founded in 2012, whose goal is to provide educational and creative arts programs for youth of marginalized communities. The concept of KATD was inspired by a humble shool teacher, Doris Batson, who noticed during her years of teaching how the talents of mostly at-risk students would often go unnoticed, either because they lacked confidence or opportunities to share their gifts outside the classroom. After recognizing the need to engage a supportive network for these young people, the idea led to create an outreach learning program by a group of like-minded individuals, thus officially forming KATD. The areas of mentoring, educational activities, creative arts, and promoting engagement within community service, all became fundamental principles of KATD.

KATD has been recognized throughout the years by local businesses and other respected organizations for its missional programs that uplift underserved communities. Doris Batson, on behalf of KATD, has received acclaimed recognition from groups such as Women in Tyler, East Texas Chapter of the Links, Top Teens of America, and was a finalist of KLTVs 65th Anniversary celebration. Also, KATD made its way into East Texas homes through a well-known T.V. public service announcement called “Heart to Serve,” which regularly spotlighted KATD’s youth members who ministered good deeds within the community through their talents.

After over a decade of service to our youth, the overall goal of KATD remains the same. We are wholly committed to supporting and bringing together young, diverse minds from all walks of life; to allow them a chance to broaden their minds, experiences, relationships and connections; to artistically express themselves confidently on broader stages; to help them become effective leaders flourishing in today’s society; and to champion our kids believe in their dreams.
